Civil Engineer (municipal)

Do you have a track record of success with municipal water and wastewater projects? MMS Consultants, Inc. would like to talk. We're an established firm with more than 40 years of successful practice and tens of thousand of projects under our belt.

We need someone who is deeply familiar with current best water practices and tuned into the latest responsible, sustainable solutions. This is a potential leadership position and also requires someone who is comfortable with networking to develop new business relationships, public speaking, and presentations. You'll spend time at the computer, but you'll also enjoy getting out to meet clients and provide MMS-quality customer service.

We enjoy an excellent reputation for a wide range of projects, including treatment plants, pump stations, lift stations, pipeline layout, odor control systems, water wells, dewatering and power-consumption evaluations.

Responsibilities

Engineering:

  • Design water supply and wastewater facilities and processes, municipal improvements, subdivisions and site plans.
  • Make design recommendations, adaptations and modifications.
  • Perform calculations for project design and permitting.
  • Prepare site investigation, analyses and technical reports.
  • Review and summarize local, state and federal regulations.
  • Prepare accurate contract documents for publicly bid projects, including but not limited to plan drawings, design computations, cost estimates and technical specifications.
  • Prepare accurate permit application packages.
  • Complete design work using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Work closely with other disciplines on multidiscipline projects.

Project management:

  • Develop fees, write proposals, prep and deliver presentations, and negotiate and review contracts.
  • Manage and appropriately prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
  • Monitor financial status of projects and tasks.
  • Responsible for project schedules and completion of projects on deadline.
  • Effectively communicate information to staff, clients and leadership team.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence concerning the direction of assigned projects.
  • Attend meetings, sometimes outside regular work hours, with city councils, P&Z boards and clients.

Business development:

  • Enhance the firm’s reputation with clients, the public and the profession:
  • Help build the professional practice of the firm. Develop and expand sales and new clients.
  • Represent the company and engineering department in client meetings, project meetings and presentations in a professional and confident manner.
  • Effectively communicate with staff, clients, contractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Develop a network of clients, partners and influencers within engineering communities.
  • Participate in related professional societies, conferences and local organizations in support of business development and networking.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate is a Professional Engineer in the State of Iowa or able to become licensed in Iowa. Five to seven years’ experience with municipal water and wastewater projects is required. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required; an emphasis on hydrology or environmental engineering preferred. Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D is preferred.

Professional Engineer

A licensed civil engineer is sought for MMS Consultants, Inc., an established and growing civil engineering and land surveying firm in Eastern Iowa. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, works independently, has sound decision-making and communication skills, and is willing to mentor junior staff. In this position, a successful candidate will build technical expertise, a professional network and business development skills.

MMS Consultants is located in Iowa City, Iowa, and provides professional services throughout Eastern Iowa. The Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor is the second fastest-growing area in the state, providing a distinctive mix of urban, suburban and rural settings to call home and welcoming, safe places to raise a family. Iowa City is also home to the University of Iowa, which fosters a thriving, entrepreneurial culture with a unique college vibe. The area offers a vibrant nightlife, a variety of cultural activites and venues, and easily accessed recreational opportunities.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day tasks and the financial aspects of projects necessary to complete them on time, on budget and according to scope.
  • Multitask on several projects at one time, applying appropriate effort to each.
  • Communicate with managers, peers, clients and regulatory agencies regularly. Attend meetings, sometimes outside regular work hours, with city councils, P&Z boards and clients.
  • Oversee technical design aspects of projects, and coordinate design tasks between departments as needed.
  • Perform detailed design.
  • Perform calculations for project design and permitting.
  • Prepare site investigation, analyses and technical reports.
  • Review and summarize local, state and federal regulations.
  • Prepare accurate contract documents for publicly bid projects, including but not limited to plan drawings, design computations, cost estimates and technical specifications.
  • Prepare accurate permit application packages.
  • Seal work according to state licensure procedures.
  • Develop a network of professional contacts through involvement in civic and technical organizations and leadership as an expert in the field.
  • Recognize opportunities for new projects and assist principals with developing leads for new business.
  • Coach junior staff and review their work.

Qualifications:

The qualified candidate is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Iowa or able to become licensed in Iowa. At least 5-7 years’ experience and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering are required. Must be proficient in AutoCAD 3D.

Engineer Technician

MMS Consultants, Inc. is seeking an experienced engineer technician with demonstrated CAD skills to join our civil engineering and land surveying firm. The right candidate will join an experienced team of engineer technicians, working in support of our Professional Engineers and project managers.

MMS is a civil engineering and land surveying firm serving the private and public sectors in Eastern Iowa for 40 years. Our specialties include land development, school projects and municipal engineering services.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist civil engineers with plan preparation, evaluation of field conditions, design changes and reports.
  • Analyze and help create topographical surveys, municipal project plans, subdivision construction plans and water management projects.

  • Qualified candidates must have three to five years’ experience as an engineering technician and be deeply familiar with AutoCAD Civil 3D. An associate’s degree in computer drafting is preferred, but not required.
