city of kalona 127.jpgIn 2009, the City of Kalona sought help planning a more pedestrian-friendly and welcoming downtown.  MMS helped to flesh out the vision by assessing the existing infrastructure and offering a plan to provide a new streetscape. Our plan included aesthetic improvements, safety, and better water management.  Designs centered around cultural touchstones, featuring artistic quilt designs, destination signage, landscaping, street furniture and way-finding information.  Sustainability was a primary goal, resulting in storm sewer improvements, energy efficient lighting and new ADA compliant sidewalks.

MMS also helped the City of Kalona secure funding in the form of grants. The City was awarded $1,055,000 in grant money from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation as well as applying for $547,000 in grant money from the Vision Iowa, Community Attraction and Tourism Grant.  The total estimated cost of the project was about $2,500,000.

MMS is provided a comprehensive design Kalona streetscape3.jpgpackage for this project, including topographic and property surveys, preliminary and final design, cost estimates, construction plans and specifications, permitting, bidding services and construction surveying and administration.

Design work on this project began in March, 2009. Construction was completed in November, 2010.
