Montezuma continually strives to improve the quality of life for its 1,600-plus residents through public improvement projects. In 2007, residents elected to reconstruct several streets throughout the city with new curb and gutter concrete streets. The affected streets were in various stages of disrepair and consisted of seal-coat streets with ditches and original brick streets. City leaders also chose to improve the existing drainage systems in these areas and add intake structures to serve the new curb and gutter streets.
Montezuma’s budget for the project allowed for more than 6,000 lineal feet of streets to be reconstructed. Portions of Madison, Grove, Irwin, Clark, Cass, Liberty, Fifth and 10th streets were the priority.
The need to accommodate several existing utilities and drainage structures with the new drainage systems and streets was challenging. The project design was required to provide adequate drainage for the adjacent properties, as well as maintain access for local residents during construction.
MMS Consultants was involved in all stages of this project. Once the city’s budget was established, the topographic survey was completed. MMS then provided the design of the streets and drainage systems, along with construction specifications and bidding documents. During construction, MMS provided staking, inspection and administration. Communication with the city and the Iowa DOT was crucial to success of the project. The project was substantially completed in November 2007.
