Celebrating Our Teammates

The end of 2017 finds us at a great point to acknowledge the achievements of three of our most senior associates. All three are transitioning to less active roles (given the fact that they still have a lot of passion for the work they do, we'll see how that pans out.)

In any event, we'll be celebrating their accomplishments with an Open House on December 13 (see above). Now, a bit about each of them:

Glen Meisner, Partner

Glen has enjoyed a storied career in engineering and land surveying in his 45 years in the business, 28 of those with MMS Consultants, Inc. In recent years, his efforts have been focused on business development, municipal engineering, surveying and subdivision plats. Previously, he spent nearly 18 years in county engineer and assistant county engineer roles in Eastern Iowa.

Glen currently joins partner Jim Lichty leading the survey department. As a licensed Professional Land
Surveyor, he has a passion for cornerstone restoration and historical cornerstones — searching for them, unearthing them and recording them. In addition to serving as the city engineer for Riverside, Glen has designed and managed many, many projects. Here are a few:

  • Preliminary topographical and boundary survey for the new Hancher Auditorium;
  • Topographical and boundary survey for the Dubuque Street Elevation and Park Road Bridge replacement;
  • Topographical survey for the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids; and
  • Many final subdivision plats in Johnson, Linn, Cedar, Iowa, Muscatine, Jones and Washington counties.

Ed Brinton, P.E.

Ed's been an engineering force in Iowa City for 49 years. His work has been largely focused on water supply and wastewater treatment for small communities, municipalities, and industrial processes. His work includes engineering and financial studies, preparation of drawings and specifications, construction management, start-up operations, and operator training for water and sewage projects.  He has extensive experience with evaluating, salvage and reconstruction of water and wastewater treatment equipment.  Prior to joining MMS Consultants, Ed was water superintendent for the City of Iowa City, Iowa.

Some notable projects include:

  • River Street stormwater pump station in Iowa City;
  • Twin County Dairy wastewater plant in Kalona;
  • Solon wastewater plant;
  • Water Plant computer control system, Iowa City;
  • S. Sycamore green space and wetland drainage corridor, Iowa City; and
  • Brooklyn, Iowa wastewater treatment plant.

Larry Smith, Engineering CAD Technician

Larry has been involved in creating the project documents for far too many subdivisions and school projects to list here (or in anything other than a small book, for that matter). Larry has been instrumental in the creation of CAD department processes. His experience has proven invaluable as a part of the team that welcomes and supports new CAD employees.

Larry came to the Civil Engineering field mid-career, so to speak. He went back to school to learn the professional in the late 1990's, finishing in 1999. He began working at MMS in 2000 as a contract employee and joined us as a full time permanent staff member shortly after.
