North Liberty schools are part of the Iowa City School District. The city is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa and the
new Christine Grant Elementary School was planned to fill a desperate need for additional classrooms and facilities to serve the city's rapidly growing north side.
The District had acquired the land for an elementary school years before, but when the time came to begin construction, there were several details to iron out. Some land swaps and easement adjustments had to be negotiated to accommodate the site concept. MMS helped secure the required changes and completed the site plan and construction documents. Ground was broken in May of 2018, ushering in a construction season of site and infrastructure preparation, including grading, materials and equipment load-in and the start of foundation work.
The spring of 2019 came with considerable rain, creating issues with runoff that required some re-grading as well as hampering simple movement on the site. The pace accelerated mid-summer and continued right up to the first day of school on August 23, 2019.
One of the notable features of the project involved a thorough review of maintenance procedures and costs at existing District schools. The knowledge gained was used to design Grant school features that would improve facility durability/performance and lower on-going maintenance costs.
The entire cost of the project was approximately $19M.
